I think the concepts are interesting, like props to Herbert for coming up with an unique world and religion or whatever was going on there, but I'm still not sure what's going on with some stuff. Universe-specific vocab abounded, with sparse context clues. In order to understand what words or phrases meant, you had to consult the glossary. GLOSSARY! And I'm all for glossaries-- as long as they are supplemental so you can remind yourself what terms mean, not as the only way for you to learn what a Jihad is. So, yeah, it was hard to get through. 1386849219722 20 64585cb0-02c4-4daf-879f-f33a920401ea play-lh.googleusercontent.com/a-/ALV-UjWXwr_DsGl2bbIW15A5gRyaY6XKXa5ZzlKwR2CdRRZhLx_gVpay Jon and Chris Bergeron 2 It really is not very good. I believe everyone that says it is amazing says that because the have never read it and assume it's good or they think they should say it is awesome because they are confused. First off it is a fantasy book. There are courts, dukes, emperors and magic. Just because it takes place in the future does not it make it science fiction. It is incredibly slow. You can add detail and make it exciting. Dune adds detail in the excitement of a text book. Maybe Herbert does this on purpose because he creates such a rich, detailed and complex universe that the reader (and the characters) can't absorb everything at once, so he omits things or leaves it up to the read/characters to deduce concepts and ideals. I heard and read many great things about this book, but I found it very difficult to read. It didn't become easier as I went along; just the characters and their ideals becoming more easily acclimated. With such complexity, I found that the book suffered in story; it was completely dry to say the least. The characters didn't create any emotional investment, and I honestly didn't care if they lived or died. I found the writing of Herbert to be completely atrocious. I will give Herbert credit: he did put forth effort in creativity, which I believe is the book's greatest achievement. 1612144770381 186 1be5f06b-f0e4-4265-a8be-76cce836204d play-lh.googleusercontent.com/a-/ALV-UjWueJHpTkzMjp2KDGoCwcOxiHiYaD9nW6k4x2vH-JvF6d0iHkxhrg Rifat Kayumov 3 It was difficult to read for the first half of book (400 pages this half!), I have almost skip this book a few times. Second half was appealing thought. But in summary: I was expecting more from this novel. IMPORTANT: if you are planning to read other books from this series - do not read afterwords by author's son! He is revealing details of the following book... It is like if someone told me in advance what would be my birthday present. Like someone stealing my surprise. Why did he do this?... 1779800929964 0 3397e016-e5ea-4fc1-9c2a-5393fcfb70bc play-lh.googleusercontent.com/a-/ALV-UjW5iHcKqVza5Qd42v0e0bB8RmGr63Q0EUmNhehkefSf3GeceZ9oKg Sofia Gonzales 4 although overly verbose and grandiose at times (for the entire first half of the novel, actually) frank herbert does an excellent job of building out a universe that has captivated generations of readers now. it says something that it took me over 4 years to finish (the overwhelming majority of those years spent trying to read the first half of the book), either about me or about herbert's writing style (probably both). this book is a classic and a catalyst for such creativity for good reason though. 1505168743630 64 e47f48c6-887c-4783-a3ad-405d80eed523 play-lh.googleusercontent.com/a-/ALV-UjUgDxUNztSE_s13YLCwqloK9zt6CdsZHmHFLojhdeywQBNJVjM2fw Addy Alago 2 The author's overindulgence in technobabble and gibberish adds absolutely nothing to the story. It's as if Frank Hebert is trying to convince the reader that the material is far more exotic than it actually is. The story itself isn't bad but given the buzz behind this call classic I really hoped for more Overrated 1564205837251 114 2355fa01-6c1e-41b3-bb13-c7cf49088d50 play-lh.googleusercontent.com/a-/ALV-UjX65_M67maezCQ_x4VxLVv0MCMxDm7xvP7yKx3VksyDDYo3u57OWQ Andrew Sheldon 4 I really enjoyed reading this book. The story was great, the action kept me on edge. I hate to admit I've actually ignored some responsibility to spend extra time reading it. I did find the language challenging. I could not find definitions for words used that fit the context in which he was using them. And many words were made up, or used incorrectly, making comprehension challenging at points. Despite THAT, it was still great. So much better than the movie, which did not do it any justice. 1711930135458 0 5452bfdf-0a14-4466-bac9-bf9f1d2833cf play-lh.googleusercontent.com/a-/ALV-UjUKu0IGR_pb-OLokn3bdLt5RQrvwBUdzOL3JLS_ikXUMwQBWtfEdg Scott Bruce 4 Fascinating concepts and world building, clunky prose and terribly stilted dialogue. FH's writing steadily improves over books 1-3 (Dune, Messiah and Children) and later books in the series are much less of a slog than the first. Absolutely worth reading, this is a phenomenal book given its historical context and is full of great ideas even if it's mechanically lacking. 1625146057288 171 52bfd2a9-7b76-467e-82c0-9ecb068246af play-lh.googleusercontent.com/a-/ALV-UjWe661RAwanu2pEv6Eu96s0aTv1oWAu11wZq5K1_RPEbqG68zz3NA Joseph Kreifels II 4 7-01-2021 There are things I like and things I dislike. The story is ok, but I kind of wish it could be better in some ways. Some of the characters in the book are annoying. Most of the likable characters in this book are killed off. The story is rushed in some parts and slowed in other. The story begins leaving you hoping for something great, but keeps burning all bridges of hope, leaving me a bit disappointing. Hopefully the upcoming movie will help make the story feel a little more exciting.-- The universe the series is set is in is a bit weird, and feels more fantasy.-- Biggest problem I have with is with the author. He seems to have used a thesaurus to find the strangest words he could in place of more simpler ones. Sometimes it gets to the point where the book feels illegible. He also over indulges in the use of the word "Presently" in between dialogue/actions. The book feels unnecessary long, while the story short. Too much unnecessary exposition perhaps? 1438924922354 442 2fd5cbaa-5e14-478d-b206-690ba41c7ac1 play-lh.googleusercontent.com/a-/ALV-UjWskGxzMGfoXq-jNTwSQRKFl43nn9SXLTmxbD354XpVkNHxohWr Sky Stewart 4 Great world. Very absorbing. I can see why this is a sci-fi classic. However, Arrakis is definately the star of this show, and that is a shame. The characters are more like set pieces, illustrating their world's history. It is no surprise that Paul becomes less relatable as he becomes more powerful. The problem is having nobody else to cheer for. Herbert kills off all his underdogs well before the story's climax and does so much foreshadowing that by the time the big battle starts all we have left are an anointed messiah, his disciples, and an assortment of already doomed villains. If the male characters are 2 demensional, the female characters are even flatter. The big twist never comes, the forgone conclusions remain forgone, but the expert world building means this book is still worth reading. Dune
