Aircraft pre-buy records check

Use before a pilot, aircraft broker or flight-school operator makes an offer on a used US-registered aircraft. Reads the FAA registration and owner, recorded liens and bills of sale, the serial number's registration history and the airworthiness directives for the make and model, and lists what the pre-buy inspection must confirm.

# Aircraft pre-buy records check

For one aircraft by tail number. Paper problems (liens, an AD not complied with, a registration gap) cost more than most squawks. Check them before the mechanic does.

## 1. Read the registration

1. Look up the tail number with @[FAA · Aircraft](alexandria:faa-gov/aviation-records/aircraft): registered owner, serial number, make and model, engine, certificate issue and expiry, airworthiness date.
2. Confirm the seller is the registered owner or holds an FAA dealer certificate with @[FAA · Dealer search](alexandria:faa-gov/aviation-records/dealer_search).

## 2. Check title

3. Read @[FAA · Aircraft documents](alexandria:faa-gov/aviation-records/aircraft_documents) for recorded liens, security agreements and bills of sale. An unreleased lien must be cleared at closing.
4. Search @[FAA · Aircraft search](alexandria:faa-gov/aviation-records/aircraft_search) by serial number to see whether the airframe was registered under other tail numbers, a sign of export, rebuild or deregistration.

## 3. List the ADs

5. Search @[FAA · Airworthiness directive search](alexandria:faa-gov/aviation-records/airworthiness_directive_search) with the make and model and status Current. Results match broadly, so keep ADs whose title names this model.
6. Read each relevant AD with @[FAA · Airworthiness directive](alexandria:faa-gov/aviation-records/airworthiness_directive) for applicability by serial range and whether it is recurring.

## 4. Check the owner

7. Search @[CourtListener · Search dockets](alexandria:courtlistener-com/dockets/search_dockets) with the owner as party_name for disputes that could cloud title.

## Write the pre-buy brief

- **Registration:** owner, serial, certificate expiry, dealer status.
- **Title:** liens open or released, prior tail numbers.
- **AD list:** number, subject, one-time or recurring, applies to this serial or not.
- **Inspection checklist:** each AD and logbook entry the mechanic must sight.
- **Sources:** cite N-number, document ids and AD numbers. Say what could not be found.
