# Equipment auction pre-bid check

For one AuctionTime lot (listing id or URL). Auction lots sell as-is, so the checks happen before the bid.

## 1. The lot

1. Read @[AuctionTime · Auction lot](alexandria:auctiontime-com/equipment-auctions/get_auction_lot): year, manufacturer, model, **serial number**, hours or miles, condition notes, spec groups, seller, current bid, bid count and end time.

## 2. Identity and safety (on-road units)

2. If the serial is a 17-character VIN, decode it with @[NHTSA vPIC · Decode VIN](alexandria:vpic-nhtsa-dot-gov/vehicles/decode_vin): confirm year, make, model, GVWR class and engine match the listing.
3. Pull recalls with @[NHTSA · Vehicle recalls](alexandria:nhtsa-gov/recalls/vehicle_recalls) by the decoded year, make and model, and note components and remedies to ask the seller about.

## 3. Comparables

4. Search @[AuctionTime · Search auction lots](alexandria:auctiontime-com/equipment-auctions/search_auction_lots) with the same manufacturer and model, listing_type upcoming, to see how many similar units are coming up (supply this month).
5. Run the same search with listing_type results for closed lots; open close matches with @[AuctionTime · Auction lot](alexandria:auctiontime-com/equipment-auctions/get_auction_lot) for year and hours. Final prices are often hidden from anonymous visitors; say so where that is the case.
6. Check the seller's other consignments with @[AuctionTime · Auction events](alexandria:auctiontime-com/equipment-auctions/list_auction_events) and @[AuctionTime · Sale catalog](alexandria:auctiontime-com/equipment-auctions/get_sale_catalog): a fleet dispersal often means well-maintained, similar units.

## Write the check

- **Lot summary:** spec, hours, condition, seller, current bid.
- **Identity:** VIN decode match or mismatch, open recall components.
- **Market:** comparable units upcoming and closed, with what is known about price.
- **Max bid:** a figure with its reasoning, or "insufficient comparables".
- **Sources:** cite each fact to its listing id or VIN. Say what could not be found.
