# Underpriced used car finder

For one make and model, a year range and a ZIP code. Cheap is easy to find; cheap and clean needs the VIN.

## 1. The listings

1. Search @[Kelley Blue Book · Listings](alexandria:kbb-com/vehicles/listings) with make, model, year range, maximum mileage and ZIP, sorted by price ascending. Keep each **listing_id**, VIN, price, mileage and deal rating.
2. For the 10 cheapest, read @[Kelley Blue Book · Listing](alexandria:kbb-com/vehicles/listing): price history (cuts), KBB Fair Purchase Price, warranty and seller rating.

## 2. Is it really cheap

3. Get the trim slug for each model year with @[Kelley Blue Book · Trims](alexandria:kbb-com/vehicles/trims), then value each car with @[Kelley Blue Book · Book value](alexandria:kbb-com/vehicles/book_value) (private_party, its mileage, good condition, same ZIP). Discount equals book value minus asking price.

## 3. Why might it be cheap

4. Decode each VIN with @[NHTSA · Decode VIN](alexandria:nhtsa-gov/recalls/decode_vin); keep the NHTSA **vehicle_id**.
5. Pull recalls with @[NHTSA · Vehicle recalls](alexandria:nhtsa-gov/recalls/vehicle_recalls) by vehicle_id: component and remedy.
6. Read owner complaints with @[NHTSA · Vehicle complaints](alexandria:nhtsa-gov/recalls/vehicle_complaints) for the model year: repeated failures (transmission, engine) explain a low market price.

## Write the shortlist

- **Ranked table:** listing, price, book value, discount, mileage, price cuts, recalls, top complaint component.
- **Best three:** why each is a real bargain, and the question to ask the seller (open recall repaired, service records).
- **Pass list:** cheap for a reason.
- **Sources:** cite each figure to its listing_id, VIN or NHTSA record. Recall checks here are model-level, not proof a specific VIN was repaired.
