# Collector car auction bid ceiling

For one live Cars & Bids auction. The comments and the VIN often say more than the listing.

## 1. The car

1. Read the listing with @[Cars & Bids · Auction](alexandria:carsandbids-com/car-auctions/auction): **VIN**, mileage, title status, modifications, known flaws, service history, current bid, reserve status and end time.
2. Read questions and the seller's answers with @[Cars & Bids · Auction comments](alexandria:carsandbids-com/car-auctions/auction_comments) (filter seller), then the bid history (filter bids) for how many bidders are serious.
3. Check the seller with @[Cars & Bids · User profile](alexandria:carsandbids-com/car-auctions/user_profile): past auctions and whether cars sold or were relisted.

## 2. Is it what it says

4. Decode the VIN with @[NHTSA vPIC · Decode VIN](alexandria:vpic-nhtsa-dot-gov/vehicles/decode_vin): model year, trim, engine, drive type and plant. Flag any mismatch with the listing title (a base model sold as a performance trim).
5. Pull recalls for that year, make and model with @[NHTSA · Vehicle recalls](alexandria:nhtsa-gov/recalls/vehicle_recalls) and ask whether each was done.

## 3. What it is worth

6. Read comparables with @[Cars & Bids · Similar auctions](alexandria:carsandbids-com/car-auctions/similar_auctions), and widen with @[Cars & Bids · Search auctions](alexandria:carsandbids-com/car-auctions/search_auctions) (status closed, same model, year range). Keep sold prices and mileage; drop reserve-not-met results.

## Write the bid note

- **Car summary:** spec as decoded, mileage, flaws, mods.
- **Comparable table:** auction, year, mileage, condition notes, sold price.
- **Ceiling:** a walk-away bid from the comparables, adjusted for mileage and flaws, with the reasoning.
- **Red flags:** VIN mismatch, unanswered questions, seller relist history.
- **Sources:** cite each figure to its auction id or VIN record. Say what could not be found.
