Disposal well seismicity check

Use when a saltwater disposal operations engineer or regulatory geologist needs to review earthquake activity near a disposal well before a permit renewal or rate increase. Reads recent and historic quakes around the well, details of the largest event, any regulator GIS layers for seismic response areas and, in Alberta, regulator guidance.

# Disposal well seismicity check

For one well location. The well coordinates carry into every search.

## 1. Recent activity

1. Search @[USGS · Search](alexandria:earthquake-usgs-gov/earthquakes/search) with the well latitude and longitude, max_radius_km 25, last 12 months. Count events by magnitude band.
2. Repeat for the previous five years to see whether activity rose after injection started or changed.
3. Read the largest event with @[USGS · Event](alexandria:earthquake-usgs-gov/earthquakes/event) for depth, felt reports and PAGER level.

## 2. Regulatory zones

4. Search for the state regulator's seismic response or induced seismicity layers with @[ArcGIS · Search datasets](alexandria:arcgis-com/gis-layers/search_datasets), then check the well point with @[ArcGIS · Query layer](alexandria:arcgis-com/gis-layers/query_layer).
5. For Alberta wells, search the regulator site with @[Alberta Energy Regulator · Site search](alexandria:aer-ca/energy-regulator-decisions-directives-notices/site_search) for "induced seismicity" and read any subsurface order the results point to.

## Write the seismicity check

- **Activity:** events by year and magnitude within 25 km; depth pattern.
- **Largest event:** magnitude, date, distance, felt reports.
- **Zones:** whether the well sits inside a response area.
- **Implications:** what the permit or volume request should address. Not a causation finding.
- **Sources:** cite every figure to the capability and record it came from. Say what could not be found rather than guessing.
