Game-ready 3D model shortlist

Use when a game developer or technical artist needs a 3D model for a game and has to know it can ship. Searches Sketchfab, Poly Haven, ambientCG and NASA 3D Resources for downloadable models within a polygon budget and an allowed licence, reads each candidate's formats, polycount and credit line, and returns a ranked shortlist with the exact attribution to put in the game's credits.

# Game-ready 3D model shortlist

For one asset brief, such as "low-poly wooden barrel under 5k faces, glTF, usable in a commercial game". Settle three things before searching:

- **Licence policy.** Commercial release: allow CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA only, and treat CC BY-SA as a flag because derivatives must stay share-alike. Drop every NC (non-commercial) and ND (no-derivatives) licence: a game retextures, decimates or rigs a model, which is a derivative. Game jam or prototype with no sales: NC is acceptable if the user says so.
- **Polygon budget.** A face count ceiling (for example 5,000 for a prop, 30,000 for a hero character).
- **Format.** The pipeline's format: glTF/GLB for most engines, FBX when the pipeline needs it. Every read below asks for that format, and a candidate that does not offer it is dropped.

## 1. Search

1. Search @[Sketchfab · Search models](alexandria:sketchfab-com/models-3d/search_models) with the brief as `query`, `downloadable: true`, `max_face_count` set to the budget, and one `license` per call (cc0, then by, then by-sa if allowed). Add `animated: true` only when the brief needs animation clips: it filters on animations, not on a rig. No record here says whether a model has a skeleton, so when the brief needs a rig, mark each pick's rig as unconfirmed and point the user to the Sketchfab viewer or model page to check it. If a licence slug is unclear, read @[Sketchfab · List filters](alexandria:sketchfab-com/models-3d/list_filters): it states whether each licence requires attribution and allows commercial use.
2. Search @[Poly Haven · Search assets](alexandria:polyhaven-com/graphics-assets/search_assets) with `type: models` and the brief as `query`. Every Poly Haven asset is CC0, and results carry `polycount`.
3. Search @[ambientCG · Search assets](alexandria:ambientcg-com/pbr-assets/search_assets) with `type: ["3d-model"]` and the brief as `q`. ambientCG assets are CC0.
4. For space, aerospace or planetary props, search @[NASA 3D · Search models](alexandria:science-nasa-gov/models-3d/search_models) with `category: model` and `format` set to the brief's format (glb or fbx). NASA media are not under a CC licence. They follow NASA's media usage guidelines: commercial use is generally allowed, but the NASA name and insignia may not imply endorsement. Record the guideline link from the result's `license`.

## 2. Read each candidate

Keep at most eight candidates within budget. Then read each one:

5. Sketchfab: @[Sketchfab · Get model](alexandria:sketchfab-com/models-3d/get_model) by `uid`. Keep `license` (slug, `attribution_required`, `commercial_use_allowed`), the ready-made `attribution` line, `formats` (with each archive's face and texture counts), `texture_count`, `animation_count` and `is_age_restricted`. Sketchfab archives come as glb, gltf, usdz or source (the uploaded original). An FBX brief fits a Sketchfab model only if its source archive is FBX, which the record does not say, so flag it for the user to confirm on the model page. Archives need a signed-in Sketchfab account to download, so hand over the `page_url`, not a file link.
6. Poly Haven: @[Poly Haven · Get asset](alexandria:polyhaven-com/graphics-assets/get_asset) by `id` with `format` set to the brief's format (gltf, fbx, blend or usd) and a texture `resolution` such as 2k. An empty `files` list means the model is not offered in that format. Keep `files` (direct URLs, sizes, md5), `polycount`, `lods` and `authors`.
7. ambientCG: @[ambientCG · Get asset](alexandria:ambientcg-com/pbr-assets/get_asset) by `id`. Keep `downloads` whose `extension` matches the brief's format (resolution, format and URL per file) and `license`.
8. NASA: @[NASA 3D · Get model](alexandria:science-nasa-gov/models-3d/get_model) by `slug`. Keep `files`, `image_credit` and the `license` restrictions.

Drop any candidate whose licence fails the policy, whose model is not downloadable or not offered in the brief's format, or whose polycount in the chosen format exceeds the budget. Do not round a licence up: "free to view" or "free standard" on Sketchfab is not CC.

## Write the shortlist

- **Shortlist table:** rank, name, source, licence (full name), commercial use yes/no, polycount, formats, texture count and resolution, animation count, rig (unconfirmed unless the user checked it), link.
- **Credits:** for each pick, the exact attribution line. Use Sketchfab's `attribution` verbatim. For CC0 sources, attribution is not required; still list "Name by Author, Poly Haven (CC0)" so the team knows where it came from. For NASA, use the published credit and add "Courtesy NASA. Use does not imply NASA endorsement."
- **Licence flags:** CC BY-SA picks, NASA insignia or logos on the model, and age-restricted Sketchfab models.
- **Unknowns:** say when a model's licence or polycount was missing from the record rather than guessing, and point to the model page for the user to check.
- **Sources:** cite every figure to the capability and record it came from.
