Gas storage weather check

Use when a natural gas trader or utility gas buyer, before or after the weekly EIA storage report, asks whether storage is tight going into heating season. Compares the weekly storage build with last year, reads the cold in the forecast for big consuming cities, the futures strip and fund positioning, and gives a balanced view on price risk.

# Gas storage weather check

For the current report week. Storage numbers from step 1 frame how much a cold forecast matters.

## 1. Storage versus history

1. From `natural-gas/stor/wkly` (find facets with @[EIA · Facet values](alexandria:eia-gov/energy-data/facet_values)), pull Lower 48 working gas for the last ten weeks and the same weeks last year with @[EIA · Route data](alexandria:eia-gov/energy-data/data). Report the latest level, the weekly change and the gap to last year.

## 2. Demand coming

2. For three big heating markets (for example Chicago, New York, Boston), read seven-day highs and lows with @[National Weather Service · Forecast daily](alexandria:api-weather-gov/weather/forecast_daily). Compute rough heating degree days against 65F.
3. Compare those cities' forecast lows with the month's normal from @[NASA POWER · Climate normals](alexandria:power-larc-nasa-gov/weather-history/climate_normals).

## 3. What the market prices

4. Find Henry Hub natural gas futures with @[CME Group · Product search](alexandria:cmegroup-com/fomc-rate-probabilities/product_search), then read the strip with @[CME Group · Futures settlements](alexandria:cmegroup-com/fomc-rate-probabilities/futures_settlements). Note the winter months premium over the front month.
5. Read managed-money net positions for natural gas from @[CFTC COT · Disaggregated combined](alexandria:cftc-gov/commitments-of-traders/disaggregated_combined) (find the code with @[CFTC COT · Markets](alexandria:cftc-gov/commitments-of-traders/markets)).

## Write the check

- **Storage:** level, weekly change, gap to last year.
- **Weather:** forecast HDDs by city versus normal.
- **Market:** winter premium and fund positioning.
- **Balance:** whether weather, storage and positioning point the same way. Not trading advice.
- **Sources:** cite every figure to the capability and record it came from. Say what could not be found rather than guessing.
