Salvage auction rebuild economics

Use when a rebuilder, exporter or used-car dealer is deciding whether to bid on a damaged or salvage-title car at auction. Reads the lot's damage and odometer, prices it against similar sold lots, decodes the VIN and checks open recalls, and compares with clean-title retail value to set a maximum bid that leaves room for repair and branding discount.

# Salvage auction rebuild economics

For one auction lot or a short list. Profit equals rebuilt resale value minus winning bid, repairs, fees and the salvage-title discount. Most mistakes are in the comparables and hidden recalls.

## 1. Read the lot

1. Find lots with @[bid.cars · Search lots](alexandria:bid-cars/vehicles/search_lots) by make, model, year range and loss_type. Keep the **lot** id and VIN.
2. Read @[bid.cars · Get lot](alexandria:bid-cars/vehicles/get_lot): primary and secondary damage, odometer and whether it is actual, keys, run-and-drive status, title type and auction date.

## 2. Price the lot

3. Pull @[bid.cars · Similar sold lots](alexandria:bid-cars/vehicles/similar_sold_lots) for recent hammer prices on comparable damage and mileage. Use the median as the market bid.

## 3. Check the car itself

4. Decode the VIN with @[NHTSA vPIC · Decode VIN](alexandria:vpic-nhtsa-dot-gov/vehicles/decode_vin) to confirm trim, engine and airbag configuration against the listing.
5. Pull @[NHTSA · Vehicle recalls](alexandria:nhtsa-gov/recalls/vehicle_recalls) for the year, make and model. Open airbag or fuel-system recalls add parts and time.

## 4. Price the exit

6. Get the clean-title value with @[Kelley Blue Book · Book value](alexandria:kbb-com/vehicles/book_value) for the trim and mileage. Apply the user's salvage or rebuilt discount, or ask for it; do not invent one.

## Write the bid sheet

- **Lot:** damage, odometer, title, run status, auction date.
- **Comparables:** median and range of similar sold lots.
- **Vehicle checks:** VIN decode matches or not, open recalls.
- **Economics:** rebuilt resale value, user's repair estimate and fees, implied maximum bid.
- **Call:** bid up to the maximum, or pass.
- **Sources:** cite lot ids, VIN and recall campaign numbers. Say what could not be found.
