Weekly crude balance and positioning

Use when a crude oil trader or oil analyst is reading the weekly EIA petroleum status numbers and wants them in one view with prices and positioning. Reads commercial and Cushing crude stocks against last year, WTI and Brent spot, the futures curve shape and managed money positions, then says whether the data and positioning agree.

# Weekly crude balance and positioning

For the latest report week. Facet codes found in step 1 carry into every EIA read.

## 1. Inventories

1. Find the weekly stocks route with @[EIA · Routes](alexandria:eia-gov/energy-data/routes) (path petroleum/stoc) and its facets with @[EIA · Facet values](alexandria:eia-gov/energy-data/facet_values).
2. Pull US commercial crude and Cushing stocks for the last ten weeks and the same weeks last year with @[EIA · Data](alexandria:eia-gov/energy-data/data) (frequency weekly). Report level, weekly change and gap to last year.

## 2. Prices

3. Pull WTI and Brent spot from route petroleum/pri/spt (series RWTC, RBRTE) with @[EIA · Data](alexandria:eia-gov/energy-data/data), daily, last month.
4. Find crude oil futures with @[CME Group · Product search](alexandria:cmegroup-com/fomc-rate-probabilities/product_search) and read @[CME Group · Futures settlements](alexandria:cmegroup-com/fomc-rate-probabilities/futures_settlements). Compare the front month with six and twelve months out: backwardation signals tightness.

## 3. Positioning

5. Find the WTI market code with @[CFTC COT · Markets](alexandria:cftc-gov/commitments-of-traders/markets) and read managed money long and short for the last eight weeks with @[CFTC COT · Disaggregated combined](alexandria:cftc-gov/commitments-of-traders/disaggregated_combined).

## Write the weekly view

- **Stocks:** commercial and Cushing level, change, gap to last year.
- **Prices:** WTI, Brent, spread, curve shape.
- **Funds:** net managed money and its direction.
- **Read:** whether stocks, curve and positioning point the same way. Not trading advice.
- **Sources:** cite every figure to the capability and record it came from. Say what could not be found rather than guessing.
