Hurricane farm and ranch exposure

Use when an agricultural lender, crop insurer, co-op or extension office needs to know which farm counties a hurricane will hit and how hard. Maps the forecast and best track to counties, totals the rain that fell or is forecast, checks flood alerts, and returns a county-by-county exposure list for outreach and claims staffing.

# Hurricane farm and ranch exposure

For one named storm. Track points from step 1 are turned into counties and every later call runs per county.

## 1. Where it went or will go

1. Find the storm id with @[National Hurricane Center · Season storms](alexandria:nhc-noaa-gov/weather/season_storms) or @[National Hurricane Center · Active storms](alexandria:nhc-noaa-gov/weather/active_storms).
2. Read the track with @[National Hurricane Center · Best track](alexandria:nhc-noaa-gov/weather/best_track) (or the forecast positions in @[National Hurricane Center · Storm advisory](alexandria:nhc-noaa-gov/weather/storm_advisory) for a live storm). Keep points over land with their wind speed.

## 2. Which counties

3. Run @[ACIS · Area lookup](alexandria:rcc-acis-org/weather-history/area_lookup) on each overland point to get county, climate division and NWS office. Add the counties either side of the track.

## 3. How much water

4. For each county, read rain totals over the storm days with @[ACIS · Daily weather history](alexandria:rcc-acis-org/weather-history/daily_weather_history). For a storm still coming, read @[National Weather Service · Forecast daily](alexandria:api-weather-gov/weather/forecast_daily) for forecast rain instead.
5. Check @[National Weather Service · Alerts active](alexandria:api-weather-gov/weather/alerts_active) for flood warnings per county.

## Write the exposure list

- **County table:** county, closest track wind speed, storm rain total (observed or forecast), active flood alerts.
- **Priority:** counties with both hurricane-force winds and the heaviest rain first, then rain-only counties.
- **Timing:** when conditions improve enough for field assessment.
- **Sources:** cite every figure to the capability and record it came from. Say what could not be found rather than guessing.
