Network adequacy gap check for a county

Use when a health plan network development manager must prove a county meets time-and-distance standards before a filing. Lists registered specialists and facilities near members, measures drive times from population centres to the nearest one, and flags specialties that fail so contracting can recruit before the regulator does.

# Network adequacy gap check for a county

For one county and a list of required specialties. Regulators test drive time from where members live, so measure from population centres, not the county seat.

## 1. Where members live

1. Resolve the county and its places with @[US Census Bureau · Geographies](alexandria:census-gov/census/geographies), then pull population by place or tract with @[US Census Bureau · Data](alexandria:census-gov/census/data) (acs/acs5). Keep the five largest population centres and the most remote populated place.

## 2. Who is available

2. For each required specialty, search @[NPI Registry · Search](alexandria:npiregistry-cms-hhs-gov/providers/search) (taxonomy_description, state, city or postal_code) in the county and adjacent counties. Keep NPI, name and practice address.
3. For hospitals, list facilities with @[CMS Care Compare · Hospitals](alexandria:data-cms-gov/clinician-procedure-volume/hospitals) (state, city) and read star rating with @[CMS Care Compare · Hospital](alexandria:data-cms-gov/clinician-procedure-volume/hospital) (ccn).

## 3. Time and distance

4. For each population centre and specialty, measure the drive to the nearest listed provider with @[Maps · Directions](alexandria:firecrawl-maps/businesses/directions) (origin = centre, destination = practice address, mode driving).
5. Confirm the nearest practice is real and open with @[Maps · Search](alexandria:firecrawl-maps/businesses/search) (practice name and town).

## Write the gap report

- **Matrix:** specialty by population centre, minutes and miles to nearest provider, pass or fail against the standard the user gives.
- **Failures:** specialty, worst centre, nearest provider outside the county as a recruiting target.
- **Contracting list:** providers to approach first, with NPI and address.
- **Sources:** NPIs, CCNs, ACS tables, map results. Note that the plan's own contracted roster is not in these sources and say what could not be found.
