# Referral specialist vetting

For one named physician. Volume, licence, reputation and patients' experience come from different registries; this lines them up.

## 1. Identity

1. Find the physician with @[NPI Registry · NPI search](alexandria:npiregistry-cms-hhs-gov/providers/search) (first and last name, state, taxonomy). Keep the **NPI**.
2. Read @[NPI Registry · Provider record](alexandria:npiregistry-cms-hhs-gov/providers/provider): credential, status, primary taxonomy, practice address, and the **license number and state** on each taxonomy.

## 2. Licence in good standing

3. Verify the licence from step 2 in the issuing state:
   - Florida: @[Florida DBPR · Search licenses](alexandria:myfloridalicense-com/licenses/search_licenses) by license_number, then @[Florida DBPR · License complaints](alexandria:myfloridalicense-com/licenses/get_license_complaints) with the detail_id.
   - New Jersey: @[New Jersey DCA · License record](alexandria:newjersey-mylicense-com/licenses/get_license) for status and the board action flag.
   - California: @[California DCA · Physician license](alexandria:california-dca-license/licenses/physician) with the licence rank and number.
For other states, say the licence could not be verified here.

## 3. Experience and reputation

4. Pull Medicare procedure volume with @[CMS Care Compare · Procedure volume](alexandria:data-cms-gov/clinician-procedure-volume/utilization) by NPI: categories, counts (with suppressed ranges) and volume percentile. Coverage is partial: a clinician it does not find is not reported, never zero.
5. Find the practice with @[Maps · Business search](alexandria:firecrawl-maps/businesses/search) and read @[Maps · Reviews](alexandria:firecrawl-maps/businesses/reviews) (newest 30): themes on communication, wait and outcomes.
6. Search @[PubMed · PubMed search](alexandria:pubmed-ncbi-nlm-nih-gov/publications/search) by author name and specialty terms for the last five years.

## Write the note

- **Snapshot:** name, NPI, specialty, practice address, licence status and expiry.
- **Volume:** procedures relevant to the referral and percentile.
- **Flags:** discipline, complaints, poor review themes.
- **Recommendation:** refer, refer with caution, or do not refer, with the deciding fact.
- **Sources:** cite each fact to its NPI, licence record or PMID. Say what could not be found.
