Self-storage demand check from moving truck prices

Use when a self-storage developer is testing a market for a new facility. Uses U-Haul one-way truck prices into and out of the city as a migration signal, maps and reviews existing storage competitors on Maps, and reads Census renter share and household counts. Produces a demand scorecard with the competitor weaknesses to design around.

# Self-storage demand check from moving truck prices

For the target city and three to five feeder cities people commonly move from.

## 1. Who is moving in

1. Read @[U-Haul · Search truck rates](alexandria:uhaul-com/truck-rentals/search_truck_rates) from each feeder city into the target city, then the reverse, for the same pickup date. A much higher price into the city than out means more trucks leaving the feeder cities than coming back, a sign of in-migration.

## 2. Existing supply

2. Search self storage in the city with @[Maps · Business search](alexandria:firecrawl-maps/businesses/search). Keep address, rating and review count.
3. Read @[Maps · Rating trend](alexandria:firecrawl-maps/businesses/rating_trend) and @[Maps · Reviews](alexandria:firecrawl-maps/businesses/reviews) for the five largest. Tag complaints about access hours, security, price hikes and climate control.

## 3. Who needs storage

4. Read @[Census · Data](alexandria:census-gov/census/data) (acs/acs5) for households, renter-occupied share and median household income in the city's ZIPs.

## Write the scorecard

- **Migration signal:** each feeder pair with inbound and outbound truck prices and the ratio.
- **Competitors:** name, rating, trend, top complaints.
- **Demand:** renter share and households by ZIP, highlighting ZIPs far from existing facilities.
- **Design notes:** features that answer competitor complaints.
- **Sources:** cite each price to its capability and date. Truck pricing is an indirect signal, not a migration count; say what could not be found.
