Behavioral health provider desert map

Use when a county behavioral health director or community mental health planner must show where people cannot find a psychiatrist or therapist. Counts registered behavioral health providers by ZIP from the NPI Registry, sets them against population and uninsured rates from Census data, checks which practices actually operate on the map, and lists open SAMHSA-type grants to fill the gap.

# Behavioral health provider desert map

For one county. Registry counts overstate access, so the map step checks which listings are real practices.

## 1. Who is registered

1. Search @[NPI Registry · Search](alexandria:npiregistry-cms-hhs-gov/providers/search) per ZIP (postal_code, state) for taxonomies Psychiatry, Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker, Counselor and Psychiatric/Mental Health nurse practitioner. Page with skip until has_more is false. Keep NPI, taxonomy and practice ZIP.
2. For organisations, read every site with @[NPI Registry · Locations](alexandria:npiregistry-cms-hhs-gov/providers/locations) (npi) so multi-site clinics count in each ZIP they serve.

## 2. Who needs care

3. Resolve the county's ZCTAs with @[US Census Bureau · Geographies](alexandria:census-gov/census/geographies), then pull population, uninsured share and poverty per ZCTA with @[US Census Bureau · Data](alexandria:census-gov/census/data) (acs/acs5).
4. Compute providers per 10,000 residents per ZIP; the bottom quartile are candidate deserts.

## 3. Reality check

5. For each candidate desert, search @[Maps · Search](alexandria:firecrawl-maps/businesses/search) ("mental health clinic in <ZIP>", "psychiatrist in <town>"). Practices with recent reviews are open; NPI addresses with no business on the map are likely billing or mailing addresses.

## 4. Money to fix it

6. Search @[Grants.gov · Search](alexandria:grants-gov/opportunities/search) (query behavioral health, crisis services, certified community behavioral health clinic; eligibilities county and nonprofit) and read deadlines with @[Grants.gov · Detail](alexandria:grants-gov/opportunities/detail).

## Write the map

- **Table per ZIP:** population, uninsured share, registered providers, verified open practices, providers per 10,000.
- **Deserts:** ranked list with the reason each qualifies.
- **Funding options:** opportunity number, deadline, eligible applicant, ceiling.
- **Sources:** NPIs, ACS tables, map listings, opportunity ids. Say that NPI data is self-reported and what could not be verified.
