District federal spending town-hall brief

Use when a congressional district director or caseworker prepares a member for a town hall. Resolves the member and delegation, totals federal contracts and grants placed in the district's counties, adds local unemployment and income context, and lists open grant opportunities local governments can still apply for, so the member can speak to dollars and next steps.

# District federal spending town-hall brief

For one House member and one upcoming town hall. Constituents ask what Washington sends home and what they can still apply for.

## 1. The member

1. Find the member with @[House Clerk · Members](alexandria:clerk-house-gov/legislative-votes/members) (state). Keep the **bioguide_id** and district.
2. Read recent positions with @[House Clerk · Member votes](alexandria:clerk-house-gov/legislative-votes/member_votes) (bioguide_id). Flag votes on appropriations or bills the audience will raise.

## 2. Dollars in the district

3. Search @[USAspending · Award search](alexandria:usaspending-gov/awards/award_search) with **place_of_performance** set to the district's counties (or the congressional district if the filter accepts it), once for contracts and once for grants, current and prior fiscal year. Rank by amount; keep the top recipients and agencies.

## 3. Local context

4. Resolve each county with @[US Census Bureau · Geographies](alexandria:census-gov/census/geographies), then pull median household income, poverty and population with @[US Census Bureau · Data](alexandria:census-gov/census/data) (acs/acs5, latest vintage).
5. Get the latest county jobless rate with @[BLS · Bls unemployment rate](alexandria:bls-gov/economic-statistics/bls_unemployment_rate) (state_fips, county_fips).

## 4. What locals can still apply for

6. Search @[Grants.gov · Search](alexandria:grants-gov/opportunities/search) with status posted and eligibilities for county, city and nonprofit applicants, keyed to the district's top issues (roads, broadband, water). Read the top three with @[Grants.gov · Detail](alexandria:grants-gov/opportunities/detail) for deadline, match requirement and award ceiling.

## Write the brief

- **One-page summary:** federal dollars by agency and by county, top five recipients.
- **Context line per county:** income, poverty, unemployment, with vintage.
- **Votes to expect questions on:** roll number, bill, member position.
- **Open opportunities:** title, deadline, eligibility, ceiling, contact.
- **Sources:** cite award ids, ACS table ids, BLS series ids and opportunity numbers. Say what could not be found.
