Wildfire smoke sensitive-site alert list

Use when a county environmental health director decides which schools, care homes and clinics to warn as wildfire smoke arrives. Reads active air quality and fire weather alerts, checks the area's wildfire risk class, counts young children and older adults by tract from Census data, and lists sensitive sites on the map, producing a prioritised outreach list.

# Wildfire smoke sensitive-site alert list

For one county during a smoke event or fire weather watch. The aim is to reach the sites with the most vulnerable people first.

## 1. What is in effect

1. Check @[National Weather Service · Alerts active](alexandria:api-weather-gov/weather/alerts_active) (geometry = county, events air quality alert, dense smoke advisory, red flag warning). Read full text with @[National Weather Service · Alert](alexandria:api-weather-gov/weather/alert) for timing and areas.
2. Pull @[National Weather Service · Forecast hourly](alexandria:api-weather-gov/weather/forecast_hourly) for wind direction and speed over the next 48 hours to see which side of the county gets smoke.

## 2. Local fire exposure

3. Read the county's class with @[Wildfire Risk to Communities · Search places](alexandria:wildfirerisk-org/wildfire-risk/search_places) and @[Wildfire Risk to Communities · Place summary](alexandria:wildfirerisk-org/wildfire-risk/place_summary). High-risk communities may face fire as well as smoke.

## 3. Who is vulnerable

4. Pull children under 5 and adults 65 and over by tract with @[US Census Bureau · Data](alexandria:census-gov/census/data) (acs/acs5), after resolving tracts with @[US Census Bureau · Geographies](alexandria:census-gov/census/geographies).

## 4. Where they gather

5. List schools, kindergartens, nursing homes and clinics with @[OpenStreetMap · Search elements](alexandria:openstreetmap-org/places/search_elements) (tags amenity=school, kindergarten, social_facility, clinic; area_relation_id from @[OpenStreetMap · Geocode](alexandria:openstreetmap-org/places/geocode)).

## Write the list

- **Priority table:** site, type, tract, tract share under 5 and 65+, downwind yes or no.
- **Messages:** indoor activity guidance, HVAC and filtration steps, when to escalate.
- **Sources:** alert ids, forecast time, WRC place id, ACS tables, OSM ids. Say that air quality monitor readings are not in these sources and what could not be found.
