Disease burden versus research attention gap
Use when a research funder, foundation programme officer or policy analyst wants to know which diseases get far less research money and trial activity than their burden suggests. Builds a cause list from the GBD hierarchy, joins WHO mortality, NIH grants, recruiting trials and publication counts, and ranks the most neglected causes.

# Disease burden versus research attention gap For one cause group (for example neglected tropical diseases, mental disorders or cancers). The cause names fixed in step 1 are the join key for every later source. ## 1. Fix the cause list 1. Page the cause hierarchy with @[IHME GBD · Hierarchy page](alexandria:ihme-gbd-results/gbd/metadata) (type cause, gbd_round 2023), then list the children of your group with @[IHME GBD · Hierarchy children](alexandria:ihme-gbd-results/gbd/children). Keep 8 to 15 level-3 causes with their GBD names. ## 2. Burden 2. For each cause, look for a matching WHO indicator with @[WHO GHO · Indicator search](alexandria:who-int/indicators/indicators) (deaths, incidence or prevalence) and pull the latest global value with @[WHO GHO · Indicator data](alexandria:who-int/indicators/data) (spatial_dims GLOBAL). Where WHO has no series, mark burden as not available rather than estimating. ## 3. Attention 3. Count NIH money with @[NIH RePORTER · Search projects](alexandria:reporter-nih-gov/research-grants/search_projects) (text the cause name, last two fiscal years): number of projects and summed award amounts. 4. Count recruiting interventional trials with @[ClinicalTrials.gov · Trial search](alexandria:clinicaltrials-gov/clinical-trials/search) (condition the cause name, status RECRUITING). 5. Count papers from the last 24 months with @[PubMed · PubMed search](alexandria:pubmed-ncbi-nlm-nih-gov/publications/search) using the cause name as a MeSH-style query. ## Write the gap table - **Table:** cause, WHO burden figure and year, NIH projects and dollars, recruiting trials, recent papers. - **Ratios:** dollars and trials per unit of burden, ranked lowest first, only where both sides exist. - **Most neglected:** the three causes with the widest gap and the grants or trials that do exist. - **Sources:** cite every figure to the capability and record it came from. Say what could not be found rather than guessing.
