Supplement claim evidence check
Use when a dietitian, pharmacist, health journalist or retail buyer needs to know whether a dietary supplement's claims hold up. Reads the actual label doses, compares them with doses used in published trials and registered studies, and checks for recalls, producing an evidence grade per claim.

# Supplement claim evidence check For one supplement product or one ingredient. The dose read off the label in step 2 is what every study is compared against. ## 1. What is actually in the bottle 1. Resolve the ingredient name with @[NIH DSLD · Ingredient groups](alexandria:dsld-od-nih-gov/dietary-supplement-labels/ingredient_groups) so synonyms (for example ashwagandha and Withania somnifera) are searched together. 2. Find the product with @[NIH DSLD · Search labels](alexandria:dsld-od-nih-gov/dietary-supplement-labels/search_labels) (brand, product name or UPC), then read the label with @[NIH DSLD · Label](alexandria:dsld-od-nih-gov/dietary-supplement-labels/label): amount per serving, servings per day, form and every claim printed. ## 2. What the evidence says 3. Search @[PubMed · PubMed search](alexandria:pubmed-ncbi-nlm-nih-gov/publications/search) for `<ingredient> AND (randomized controlled trial OR meta-analysis) AND <claimed outcome>`. Read the strongest three abstracts with @[PubMed · Article](alexandria:pubmed-ncbi-nlm-nih-gov/publications/article) and note the dose, duration, population and effect. 4. List registered studies with @[ClinicalTrials.gov · Trial search](alexandria:clinicaltrials-gov/clinical-trials/search) (intervention the ingredient) to see what is being tested now and whether results are posted. ## 3. Safety 5. Check @[FDA · Food recalls](alexandria:fda-gov/records/food_recalls) for recalls of products containing the ingredient (supplement recalls sit in food enforcement), noting reasons such as undeclared drugs or contamination. ## Write the evidence check - **Claim table:** each label claim, the label dose, the dose studied, evidence grade (strong, mixed, weak, none). - **Dose gap:** where the label dose is below what trials used. - **Safety:** recalls and the reasons, if any. - **Sources:** cite every figure to the capability and record it came from. Say what could not be found rather than guessing.
